Through the generosity of our PTO, we are once again excited to offer One Book, One Community Family Read this Summer! For the past five years, our goal in this activity has been families reading together. Regardless of the age or reading ability of your child please share and discuss this book together as a family.
Discovering the perfect book that will appeal to all of our students, kindergarten through fifth grade is no easy task. We realize our selection of Katherine Applegate’s 2013 Newbery Award Winner The One and Only Ivan may be a stretch for many of our readers; not only because of vocabulary but also topics and themes that may provoke questions. So please find a few minutes each day to sit with your child and share this terrific book.
“Animal-loving youngsters and their adults will find plenty of food for thought in Ivan’s extraordinary story.” Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review)
Inspired by a true story, this 2013 Newbery Medal winning novel is told from the point of view of a captive silverback gorilla. It is a moving story of life-changing friendship. The One and Only Ivan is a story that has a lot of heart. It’s a beautiful glimpse into the life of an animal. It’s a reminder that we don’t know what animals are thinking. It’s a call to be kind and thoughtful to everyone. It’s a new way of looking at ourselves and what makes us human. It’s a simple story about a gorilla who is an artist. (Goodreads Review)
“The One and Only Ivan will break your heart-and then, against all odds, mend it again. In cheering for Ivan and his friends, we cheer for our own humanity and our own possibilities. Read this.” (Gary D. Schmidt)
The One and Only Ivan is a book for everyone. Kids and adults alike will enjoy Ivan and his world. Just make sure you have a couple of tissues handy for the last few pages."Kindness and its ability to change lives shines through on every single page of this book.”--Kathi Appelt, Newbery Honor author of The Underneath
